Flashback: The Beginning
I’m in jail now, I never thought I would get caught, but I had to have the last word. This is my story. If anyone’s reading this, I’m either dead or have escaped from prison. I hope I’ve escaped. I can’t stand letting General Atkin win, so here’s my story:
My Dad and my Mom were scientists who worked for the government. They worked on secret projects under the charge of General Atkin, whom they always praised and respected. He was over at our house so often that I thought of him as part of our family. He came over for dinner every Monday night, and I called him Uncle Atkin.
He was always interested in where we would be, and what I was doing. We didn’t think anything of it, we just thought he was interested in our welfare. Then my parents died, and I decided that I would turn to Atkin. I knew him and respected him, at the time, so I asked him to become my legal guardian.
At the funeral, he stayed right by my side.
“Hey Uncle Atkin,” I said looking at the floor. He didn’t ask if I was okay, but he probably knew that I wasn’t. We sat in silence during the funeral. I cried. He cried.
After the funeral, Atkin looked at me and said, “I know I can’t say anything to make you better right now. I just want you to know that I will always be there for you, Alvin.”
I paused for a moment, with tears in my eyes, “Thank you.” I whispered, and he hugged me, much like my Dad had the night I told him who I wanted to become. At that moment, I decided that Atkin was an honorable man, just like my father.
Atkin’s embrace somehow made the world seem a little brighter. I looked up at him and asked, “Will you adopt me?”
“Me? Why me?” He asked with surprise, “I’m a busy man, Alvin, you know that. I may not be there very often. I think I’m too busy to be your guardian.”
“I want you because you’re an honorable person, and I know you better than anyone. I’ve known you for basically my whole life. Who else would be a better guardian?”
A strange look came across his face—a look I should have paid more attention to—but then he smiled, “Of course, Alvin, of course. Let’s get the papers filled out as soon as we can.”
I was beaming for the rest of the day. I couldn’t think of a better person to be my legal guardian, and boy was I wrong about that…
